The Rise of Part-Time Work in Switzerland: A Changing Employment Landscape

Before moving to Switzerland, whilst working in London, I had not heard of the term “an 80% job”. Part time work was extremely rare.

In recent years, Switzerland has witnessed a significant increase in the amount of part-time working arrangements. This shift in the employment landscape reflects evolving societal and economic factors, as well as changing attitudes towards work-life balance.

Changing Work-Life Balance Priorities: One key driver behind the increase in part-time work is the growing emphasis on achieving a better work-life balance. Many individuals in Switzerland are seeking more flexibility in their work arrangements to accommodate personal responsibilities, caregiving duties, or pursue other interests outside of work..

Demographic Changes and Aging Workforce: Switzerland, like many other countries, is experiencing demographic changes, including an aging workforce. Older individuals approaching retirement age often prefer transitioning to part-time work rather than fully retiring. Part-time employment provides an opportunity for individuals to continue contributing their skills and expertise while gradually transitioning into retirement. This demographic shift contributes to the overall increase in part-time work arrangements.

Women's in the workplace: The rise in women's labour force participation is another significant factor driving the increase in part-time work in Switzerland. Women often face unique challenges in balancing career aspirations with family and caregiving responsibilities. Part-time work offers a viable solution, allowing women to maintain employment while managing familial commitments. Many women opt for reduced hours to ensure a more sustainable and flexible work-life integration.

Employment Market Dynamics: Employers are increasingly recognizing the benefits of offering part-time work arrangements. By offering part-time options, employers can tap into a wider talent pool, increase employee retention, and improve overall workforce diversity.

Advancements in Technology and Remote Work: Technological advancements and the rise of remote work have also contributed to the increase in part-time work. Flexible work arrangements made possible by technology enable individuals to work remotely and complete their tasks within flexible hours. This flexibility allows for customized part-time schedules that cater to individual preferences and availability.

Financially viable: Working part-time in Switzerland is financially viable for a wide range of professions. In a lot of parts of the world this is a luxury, however, it’s possible in a lot of professions in Switzerland to be able to live financially comfortably and also have work life balance.

If you’re considering part time employment ask yourself these questions:

  1. Why do you want it
  2. Can you afford it?
  3. Can you perform your job to a good level on a part time basis?

If you’re considering employing someone on a part time basis consider these questions:

  1. Can the job be performed to a good level on part time hours?
  2. Have you got the right measurements in place to determine it’s a success?
  3. How can you make sure the individual is fully integrated into the team whilst not 100% present?
